WHAT IS GUIDING YOUR HEALTH CARE DECISIONS?

National company answers the call to action to help consumers make informed decisions

St. Louis - May 28, 2007 - Pope Institute for Health and Education, LLC, a National Health Care Consulting firm is accepting the challenge of educating consumers about their care options and ensuring consumers receive good care.  The firm, headquartered in Missouri, provides Elder Care and Disability health care planning including Health Care Advocacy, Aging in Place Consultations, and Consumer Education.

Pamela Pope, President of the company states, “The health care industry is an intimidating structure for the average consumer.  Families mistakenly depend on providers to screen referrals for them and make the “best decision.”  The health care system does what it can to move patients through the continuum of care, but the responsibility of ensuring good care rests solely on the shoulders of families who are not well versed in their patient rights or how to go about screening options and finding resources.  Consumers need more coaching on how to navigate the health care system and make it work for them.”

The firm’s approach to Consumer Education challenges the conventional wisdom of mass mailing consumer-directed brochures and expecting families to understand the content.  Families have embraced The Institute’s personalized consulting which recognizes the variety of consumer learning styles and resource needs.  In addition to resources and information, the firm enforces accountability with scheduled follow-ups and goal setting with clients to put the plan into action.

After many years in the health care system, Mrs. Pope affirms, “It is not what you say, but how you say it, and most importantly, if the receiver understands the information.  It is not sufficient to overwhelm consumers with difficult to understand health care information and not follow-up to make certain they are able to apply that information.  Like most of us, clients need an accountability partner and respond positively to the encouragement and ongoing support.”

This unique and comprehensive approach of empowering consumers to be self-advocates is changing the way consumers approach the health care system.  After a recent one-to-one consumer education session, the client reported, “I am knowledgeable about many things but I had no idea how at risk I was by not having this information.  This is the type of information I want my children to have when making decisions for me.”

When clients complete the consultation they are better equipped to screen referrals, advocate for their patient rights, interact with medical professionals, and avoid crises due to the knowledge and skill they have acquired.  The Institute provides services throughout the US and can work with family caregivers who live a distance from the recipient of the consultation.  To find out more about Pope Institute for Health and Education, please visit the company’s website at www.PopeInstitute.com or contact Pamela Pope at the company’s headquarters by calling (314) 830-9000.
